The Sharp Aquos R6 is a smartphone with a huge 1in camera sensor, 240Hz display

Sharp is a Japanese company that most of us, if we think about them at all, associate with high-end screens. The Sharp Aquos R6 certainly fits part of that bill, in that this smartphone has one heck of a display. But it’s also got some camera skills, which makes it quite a pity that we’ll never see one in South Africa.

Why you want an Aquos R6

You see, Sharp’s new smartphone has a sharp-looking display. The 6.6in 2,730 x 1,260 display runs at a staggering 240Hz, making it one of the quickest smartphone screens on the market. One of the brightest too, as the company says it can hit a peak brightness of 2,000 nits. That’s a lot of nits.

And then there’s the camera. Unusually for a modern smartphone, there’s just a single rear sensor on this handset. But what a sensor it is, being a full 1in CMOS affair that dwarfs most smartphone camera sensors. Sharp says that its lone 20MP camera handles low-light conditions well, and that it’s got depth of field and bokeh skills as well. Of course, we’d love to see this in action before passing judgement but a camera sensor almost as large as a mirrorless camera is nothing to sneeze at.

The Sharp Aquos R6 has a full set of other features that never go out of style. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888, the headline chipset for 2021, is inside, as is 12GB of RAM, 128GB of storage (with the option to add more via microSD) and a 5,000mAh battery. It’s set for a launch in Japan closer to the middle of the year and pricing isn’t known yet.
