We all know at least one of ‘em. They fawn over vinyl records and collect speakers larger than most people’s bed side-tables: they’re called audio geeks. What these people are after, is lossless, high-quality audio that was only supported on Tidal and Amazon Music up until now. This week, Spotify announced Spotify HiFi.
Spotify hosted its first all-around update and announcement event called Stream On yesterday. It highlighted some of its most prominent creators, musicians and podcasters. The most enticing announcement of which was the addition of its HiFi subscription tier that will provide listeners with pure lossless audio. That’s essentially CD-quality audio blasted from your Spotify app.
Why HiFi?
“Premium subscribers in select markets will be able to upgrade their sound quality to Spotify HiFi and listen to their favorite songs the way artists intended,” the music streaming service said in its announcement. Obviously, ‘select markets’ rarely includes the southern-most part of Africa, but here’s to hoping it brings its CD-quality option to South Africa.
Apparently, it has been one of the most requested features by its users over the past few years — and it’s understandable. Some people just want to hear small nuances in music that isn’t otherwise clear.
It is working with ‘some of the world’s biggest speaker manufacturers’ in a bid to make Spotify HiFi accessible on all platforms and hardware. This means we may see native Spotify integration with some of our favourite speaker brands in the near future.
