Samsung makes great TV sets, even if they’re a little stand-offish about OLED because they’d probably have to get those panels from LG. One of Samsung’s sets is the monster known as The Wall, a 146in 4K television that’ll occupy… well, a wall. But, at almost four metres across, it’s a little hard to install into your home. Well, it’s about to get a little easier.
Getting over The Wall
The Wall’s big deal wasn’t just its humongous size — it also used MicroLED, a technology similar to OLED in that its inorganic pixels can turn on and off independently, without a backlight. But, if you wanted to try it out, you needed to pay Samsung large amounts of money to take over an entire wall in your home. That’s changing.
Samsung explains that “…the 110’’ MicroLED uses micrometer-sized LED lights to eliminate the backlight and color filters utilized in conventional displays. Instead, it is self-illuminating—producing light and color from its own pixel structures. It expresses 100% of the DCI and Adobe RGB color gamut, and accurately delivers wide color gamut images taken with high-end DSLR cameras.” The set also integrates 5.1 surround sound… somehow without an external speaker. Awesome.
While The Wall was modular (and could be made at just about any size), this set is a little more traditional. It’s prefabricated, so the TV’s far easier to set up in a home. Samsung’s touting a 99.99 screen-to-body ratio so it’ll probably still be a plan to get a pro to install it for you — 110 inches of TV is larger than you’re expecting. Even more so when there are barely any edges to grab hold of.
And getting a pro is certainly an option. Though the TV has only be unveiled in South Korea, it’s set for global launch in the first quarter of next year. Pricing isn’t available yet but we’d imagine that being concerned about the cost means this one isn’t for you.
