Lenovo’s bringing its X1 Fold folding PC into SA, available for pre-order now starting at R70k

Lenovo has been working on the X1 Fold, its first folding PC (yes, we know that a regular laptop also folds) for some time now. The device first pitched up in 2019 (when it was called the X1 Family) before launching earlier this year. And, now, it’s coming to South Africa. In 2021.

Counting the cost of the X1 Fold

We’ve gone over Lenovo’s first folding PC quite extensively since its announcement but if you need a refresher course, the device looks an awful lot like the folding smartphones that have been so popular of late. Except when it is closed, when it bears a resemblance to the laptop it technically is. Open it up and you’re looking at a single 13.3in flexible OLED display that looks more like an oversized tablet when in use.

Lenovo reckons the X1 Fold here in SA will arrive with an Intel Core i5-L16G7 CPU, as well as Intel UHD graphics, 8GB of LPDDR4X 4267MHz RAM and up to 10 hours of battery life. Storage options and other processor/RAM configurations aren’t confirmed but there will be various versions of the device here at launch.

If you wan to get your pre-order in, the local website for the Lenovo X1 Fold will let you do that now. The device will cost you at least R70,000, according to Lenovo SA — and the price will go up depending on which configuration you opt for. The exchange rate may also change final costing. There’s time to save up, however. It’s only due to land in South Africa in early 2021.
