Drones are big business and Sony has cottoned on to that fact. Teased last night, Sony is on the verge of unveiling its own drone, to take the fight to more established companies like DJI. We still don’t know all that much about the product but let’s go out on a limb and guess that it probably won’t have the capacity to play PlayStation 5 games. Still, it’ll probably be pretty cool.
The actual teaser put out by Sony only really gave us a look at the blades of the drone spinning above some green lighting, which feels like a strange colour for Sony to use. But then, we’re not exactly experts on marketing. The video ends with what is presumably the name of the device appearing over the blades: Airpeak.
Listen to us drone on
Sony sent out a brief release providing small nuggets of information on the Airpeak drone. But even that wasn’t really enough to get a full idea of what to expect of the device. “Sony has assigned the “Airpeak” brand to reflect its aspiration to contribute to the further evolvement and the creation of the unprecedented value through its imaging and sensing technology as well as 3R technologies (Reality, Real-time and Remote) in the drone area,” which makes it sound like something more targeted towards professionals rather than average consumers.
“Airpeak will support the creativity of video creators to the fullest extent possible, aiming to contribute to the further development of the entertainment industry as well as to improved efficiency and savings in various industries. Airpeak will also promote this project to enable drone-use with the highest level of safety and reliability in the environments where this has been difficult in the past,” continued the post. Now that sounds more consumer-focused. Why not take on both markets, right?
When can we expect the Airpeak to arrive? We don’t know the specifics but we do know that it’ll launch in 2021. We wonder if DJI is quaking in its Mini 2 boots.
