Remember the days when Nokia made everything that was good in tech? At one point it looked like we could lose the brand completely, but now it’s coming back with brilliant mid-range tech for the masses. Exactly what it stood for in the time of the 3310.
Now it looks like Nokia is officially launching an Android TV streaming box in Europe — which gives us a good indication that it might come to South Africa. The Streaming Box 8000 comes fitted with a Nokia logo and will be sold in Europe through a company called Streamview. They will sell Nokia-clad Smart TVs, set-top boxes and DAB+ radios in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
It’s a Nokia, promise
This streaming box features 4K streaming playback, runs Android 10 for TVs and is powered by an Amlogic S905X3 processor. It also comes with a fitting array of ports, most notably a full-sized HDMI, an Ethernet port, Optical Audio out, USB-C and USB-A. For a tiny box like this, those are some nice ports right there.

Sold for 100€, Amlogic S905X3 & ATV 10. Bit more expensive than other #AndroidTV devices in Europe, but it comes with a nice selection of ports, a much better SoC & a cool remote. No info on Dolby Vision/Atmos support.

It’ll also come equipped with the Google Play Store for streaming devices, so you’ll have access to pretty much all the streaming services you could possibly want. Everything from Netflix to Amazon Prime, YouTube and Google Movies will be readily available. We’ll need confirmation from local distributors (if it comes here) whether we’ll be able to access Showmax and DStv’s apps in South Africa. But that shouldn’t be a problem.
According to The Verge, “… the Streaming Box 8000 technically isn’t the first Android TV box to bear the Nokia brand name. Earlier this year, Flipkart launched the Nokia Media Streamer in India, which it sells alongside a selection of Nokia-branded TVs.”
This means it could be the first Nokia streamer to make it to South Africa too. Let’s wait and see what local distributors reckon come launch.
