Elon Musk’s going to be making his own chips. For AI, that is
Elon Musk is going to be making his own AI chips. Not literally, it’s hard to see him manually running a production line, but his company Tesla is going to be making its own AI processor chips for use in their vehicles. The point, it seems, is to accelerate the move to self-driving cars by making them even smarter. And in true Elon Musk fashion he reckons that the in-progress AI hardware is going to be “…the best in the world”. The company has engineer Jim Keller, who has previously worked at Apple and AMD designing chips, on the payroll so Elon’s confidence probably isn’t misplaced in terms of actual design. There are other hurdles to overcome at the moment but Elon Musk does tend to put his money where his mouth is. It should be interesting to see where this goes — and if it goes to people not having to drive any more, we’ll count that as a win.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is shaping up to be all spectacle, little substance
If you watched the first Jurassic World, a movie far removed from Michael Crichton’s sci-fi novels, you know that bigger and awesome-er is what the series update has been going for. The sequel to Jurassic World, subtitled Fallen Kingdom, turns things up a notch or seventeen by sending people off to rescue (some) dinosaurs because they’re… going to explode? The active volcano might have something to do with that. The trailer hints at the story taking place here but it’s mostly large quantities of action taking up our attention. As such, we’ve got almost no idea what’s going on. Are there dinosaur poachers? Why the legal proceedings about the dinos’ fate? Can Chris Pratt really outrun a volcano? Pity we need to wait till June 2018 to get answers to these questions.

If you want the world’s fastest GPU, Nvidia’s Titan V is it (and it’s expensive as hell)
Just finished your PC upgrade? That’s a pity, GPU maker Nvidia has just come up with the Titan V, a gold-and-black GPU that will destroy your wallet to the tune of $3,000 (R41,000 — so don’t expect to set up an SLI array any time soon). Why so expensive, though? That’s because the Titan V is the “…most powerful PC GPU ever created”, carrying 21 billion transistors, an AI learning architecture, 12GB of HBM2 memory, 5,120 CUDA cores and 640 so-called tensor cores — which all add up to 110 teraflops of performance. So it’ll runs your games, then? It should but the Titan V is actually intended for GPU-processing applications like machine learning and AI but it’s also possible to use it as a standard GPU. If you can get behind dropping the price of a whole PC on a single component, that is.

Street Fighter is turning 30, re-releasing every game (before SF IV) in a single bundle
Street Fighter‘s been around for a long time now, with its 30th birthday coming up next year. Of course Capcom is going to be doing something special and that something is a special 30th anniversary release of the game. The first twelve games in the series in fact, from the original Street Fighter up to Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike, are going to be included in the release and four of them (Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting, Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Street Fighter Alpha 3 and Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike) are going to be getting online multiplayer. It’s not just the games being packaged, it looks as though Capcom’s gone for a bit of history lesson as well as the world’s guitariest trailer (above). If this doesn’t pump you up on a Monday morning, nothing will.
