Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800, the current darling of the smartphone and tablet world, has got some competition on its hands in the form of Qualcomm’s newly announced Snapdragon 805.

Quite aside from the bump in clock speed (the Snapdragon 805 will run at 2.5GHz), Qualcomm is saying that the new chip is “…the first mobile processor to offer system-level Ultra HD support, 4K video capture and playback and enhanced dual camera Image Signal Processors (ISPs)”.

The new quad-core Krait 450 chip will feature a new Adreno 420 GPU, which is where the Snapdragon 805 gets its UHD capabilities. The company says that the Andreno 420 has up to 40% better performance than its predecessor.

Qualcomm says that we can expect the Snapdragon 805 to start appearing in devices in the first half of 2014.
