Huawei may be in a spot of bother at the moment but that doesn’t mean the company’s just going to fold up shop and go home. The pending launch of a new mid-range smartphone, the Huawei Y9 Prime (2019), is a testament to that. Stuff was present at a media event where the Chinese company showed off its first pop-up selfie camera smartphone to land in SA and it sure looks like Huawei’s here to stay.

I think it’s a good thing that President Cyril Ramaphosa is dreaming of a high-tech future. We need someone to dream big about the way our country will operate, not in some distant sci-fi future, but in the next few years. We need to start embracing the technologies that can make us a better place to live, find work for our youngsters in the new growth industries, and make us more attractive to investors.

In March, we saw Google make an unexpected announcement – the company is entering the gaming industry. The search engine giant announced its cloud-gaming platform, Google Stadia, that’ll run exclusively online. Basically it’s Netflix, but for games. And now we know what internet speeds you’ll need. The news… isn’t good. For South Africans, that is.
