In an interesting twist in the cold tech war, Huawei claims its own operating system called Hongmeng OS (also called Ark OS) will be faster than both Android and iOS. And we can believe that.
In an interview with French magazine Le Point, Ren Zhengfei, the CEO of Huawei, suggested that Huawei’s Hongmeng OS is not only an Android alternative but also an OS for everything from network switches, routers to data centres. The CEO also said that the Hongmeng OS is “very likely” faster than Google’s Android and Apple’s macOS. (He probs should’ve included Windows and iOS). He said that it’ll have a processing delay of fewer than five milliseconds.
Huawei is hopeful
Ren also admitted that Hongmeng OS is facing an uphill battle when it comes to cultivating a robust software ecosystem — something Google and Apple already has. The OS’s major drawback will likely be the limited app store. It’ll probably feature a small number of apps initially, and developers would need to adapt existing apps specifically for the platform. Convincing developers it’s worth the effort to tailor their apps to another platform could prove tricky.
In May, the US President, Donald Trump, signed an order that would ban U.S. companies from doing business with Huawei, but he’s since gone back on his word at the recent G20 Summit in Osaka, Japan.
The smartphone giant has pretty much revolutionised smartphone photography with its most recent flagships. It’s entirely possible that Huawei can develop an ace operating system, the question is… will people use it?
