Huawei showed off its forthcoming Mate X folding phone-let (or tab-phone) at a media event in Johannesburg today. While we were able to hold the device, we weren’t allowed to fold it, so we had to rope in the help of a Huawei representative for the video below. Nonetheless, we got to check out the camera setup and try various apps, and our early impressions suggest it’s going to be a highly desirable — and crazy expensive — when it arrives in June or July of this year.

We’re a long way out from Apple’s annual iPhone reveal but that doesn’t mean that folks aren’t still (always) trying to puzzle what’s coming next from the company. The newest talk about town? Apple’s going to be hopping on the triple-camera bandwagon for the iPhone 11. And if it’s true, helped along with an apparent design leak, we’re not really sold on the design. It doesn’t feel like something Apple would do, you know?
Earlier this year we heard that Lenovo-owned Motorola is taking another crack at their iconic Razr phone, only this time it is going to be a (very expensive) foldable device. Pricing over R20k? You’d think Huawei would have learnt from its past mistakes when it comes to its smartphone marketing campaigns. You’d think that some of the best smartphone cameras around would encourage it to use them for the promotional pics. Mobile operator Vodacom has launched support for eSIM devices in South Africa along with a new accompanying service, called OneNumber, that allows users to use a single mobile phone number across multiple devices. The first devices the network will launch with eSIM support out of the box are Samsung’s recent 42mm and 46mm Galaxy Watch (the LTE editions).
We asked Vodacom for more information on how its new eSIM offering works and is priced. This is what the operator had to say.

Despite what every spy movie in the past 30 years would have you think, fingerprint and face scanners used to unlock your smartphone or other devices aren’t nearly as secure as they’re made out to be.
While it’s not great if your password is made public in a data breach, at least you can easily change it. If the scan of your fingerprint or face – known as “biometric template data” – is revealed in the same way, you could be in real trouble. After all, you can’t get a new fingerprint or face.
