My gamertag is more useful than a business card. I write about the tech industry, hardware, software, games, and motoring.

It’s no secret that Huawei is having a bad time. Thanks to sanctions implemented against the company by the US in early 2019, it was forced to find alternatives to Google. This includes Google’s Play Store — an app many can’t fathom living without. Where do you get your apps, then? Huawei has been hard at work bulking up its own AppGallery store, adding as many local apps as possible before the release of its P40 lineup of devices. We need access to critical apps like Facebook, Twitter, Insta and Spotify too. What do these have in common? They’re US-based.…

We’re all stuck inside trying not to catch COVID-19, and all we have are our thoughts and our internet connections. Luckily, load shedding hasn’t peeked out its head for a while yet. And as an added bonus, Vuma plans on increasing line speeds of everyone on their network for the next two months.  “Vumatel together with its participating ISP partners will be upgrading the line speeds of its existing users on the network at no additional cost, with effect 1 April 2020 until the end of May 2020, to enable seamless remote working, additional streaming and educational services,” reads a…

We’ve been waiting to see what MTN’s reaction to the Competition Commission’s push to decrease data costs. And, honestly, we’re not even surprised.  It looks like MTN was the guy in class who sneakily copied Vodacom’s answers on a test. The telecoms company today announced that it will decrease data prices by up to 30%. The same amount that Vodacom announced a few weeks ago.  The 1GB data bundle (monthly) will decrease from R150 to R99 — not the #datamustfall numbers that we deserved, but the drop we received. Along with this, MTN announced that it will drop data costs…

It’s been a minute since the world was hit by a new crisis in the shape of COVID-19. Yes, it’s bizarre time, and humans are mostly doing all they can to keep the pandemic at bay.  People have resorted to dousing themselves in hand-sanitiser, self-isolating and panic buying toilet paper. Being the squishy meat sacks we are, we’ve even started coping by sharing memes, sometimes completely insensitive, and sometimes very wholesome. Now, scientists want you to send them the best corona-themed memes around. “In times of crisis and disaster, new forms of humor emerge. This phenomenon of “disaster humor” is…

‘Member, way back, when dinosaurs roamed the earth, the world had this thing called “feature phones”. Only they weren’t called feature phones. They were just… phones. One particular brand stood out — Nokia. They’re back in force and have rebooted one of our absolute favourite feature phones — the Nokia 5310.  In 2007, people around the world readied their wallets to get their hands on the ultimate music phone — the Nokia 5310 Xpress Music. It went up against Sony Erricson’s W-range of phones. But this… this was a fricking Nokia. These things just last.  It packed a 16M colour…

Now, more than ever, South Africa is in need of a drastic overhaul. Our energy issues aren’t going away anytime soon, but the future looks lit if you consider Tesla’s solutions.  The power revolution is in full swing, and the world is quickly adopting alternative energy solutions. Except for us. Not to sound like Greta Thunberg, but South Africa has a long way to go.  As we write this, Eskom’s coal and nuclear power systems are failing, and the state-owned power utility is generating more unwanted emissions than ever. This beaten path is littered with coal and tears.  Soak up…

First things first, as a precaution. If you feel unwell, or suspect you may have caught the elusive COVID-19, the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) has established a hotline. Don’t go to the doctor, you nitwit, you’ll infect everyone.  This was set up after the minister of health confirmed 14 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday afternoon. Another 13 cases were confirmed on Sunday morning — we’re guessing because of the hotline. You can call the NICD on 0800 029 999 if you suspect any ‘coronactivity’ amongst you, your family or your friends.  If you’re more technologically inclined (ahem,…
