With probably one of the most ambitions smartphone designs of the year, LG brings its Wing device to South Africa this week for R20,000 a pop. The LG Wing will be available from MTN from 1 November (this Sunday) while other retailers will only have stock from the 7th of November.  In September. LG announced what could be the strangest smartphone design we’ve seen — a swivel-dual-display format. The Wing looks like a fairly a well-engineered dual-screen smartphone that combines a 6.8in P-OLED panel with a secondary 3.9in P-OLED screen. The secondary is designed to let users combine media consumption…

The man who helped to grow his father’s small trading business into an economic powerhouse, Lee Kun-hee passed away yesterday. He was the richest man in South Korea, with a net worth of about $21bn (or R340bn). A somewhat expected spike in Samsung’s stocks followed his death.  Why? It happened due to expectations of restructuring that’ll happen within the parent company on Samsung and its smaller firms. His unfortunate death means that the holding company Samsung Electronics will have more firm control over its subsidiaries — but it goes deeper than that.  This morning, when Samsung Electronics and its other…

Facebook may not want you to own more than one Oculus VR headset Imagine this: you were so impressed with the first-gen of the Oculus headset that you decided to buy three Oculus gen-2’s. Now, you don’t want the little ones to create Facebook accounts just for the headset, so you use your own for

After the launch of the PlayStation 4, it seemed clear that Sony was making a move away from the console being a media centre, and focusing more on gaming. Fair enough, right? It’s made for gaming, with a few additional nice-to-haves. The case doesn’t seem the same for the PlayStation 5, however.  Thing is, you can still stream Netflix and a variety of other platforms on your PS4. Luckily, for those that have secured a pre-order for the upcoming PlayStation 5 console, it looks like it’ll launch with streaming services pre-loaded. In a blog post published this week, Sony has…

The biggest announcement from Huawei’s recent keynote wasn’t the Huawei Mate 40 range of devices. It also wasn’t the FreeBuds Studio or the wacky smart glasses. In reality, it was Huawei’s new push to improve its software with an announcement revealing its new Maps partner, Petal.  As we know by now, Huawei has been hit by a range of intensive sanctions from the US government which has recently threatened to cripple its supply chain. But as Huawei and its users become accustomed to a Google-less ecosystem, one thing has been an absolute nightmare on post-GMS devices: Maps.  Petal to the…

It’s amazing how a lack of Google apps and GMS hasn’t shown any signs of slowing Huawei down. The smartphone maker and telecoms company made it to the top spot in smartphone sales during a global pandemic. Now, it has announced its new lineup of HMS devices, the Mate 40, Mate 40 Pro and Mate 40 Pro+. There’s also the company’s Mate 40 Pro RS edition, but we’ll focus on the main (actually affordable) options here. Like we’ve seen on most smartphones launched in 2020, the Huawei Mate 40 range will come in 5G variants. This will make them speedier…

In one of the wackiest developments of 2020, the South African Broadcasting Commission (SABC) plans to launch its own streaming service in 2021. It will, according to reports, be similar to other video-on-demand services in the industry like Netflix and DStv Now (now just DStv). Earlier this week, the SABC revealed that it would like viewers of other services that broadcast in SA, regardless of platform, to pay TV licencing fees. Now the struggling public broadcaster has announced that it is planning its own version of a video-on-demand platform. According to News24, we don’t have a lot of details on…

Not to be confused with the wonderful Microsoft Surface Laptop Go, Microsoft just launched the Surface Go 2 in South Africa for R9,000. The Surface range features a variety of products, not only laptops. This is the case with the Surface Go 2, which is actually a tablet that comes with the Surface keyboard accessory and transforms it into a laptop.  The Surface Go 2 features a lightweight design (well, because it’s a tablet), a 10.5in PixelSense display, dual Studio Mics, a 5MP front-facing camera and some speedy Intel processors (depending on the config you go for).  Deeper than the…

Day after day, we report on how technology is advancing the human race in a variety of ways, from faster, more intuitive consumer products to industry implants and even agricultural advancements. These all have one thing in common: advanced software and hardware.  When the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) launched its new online licence booking system in the form of NaTIS (National Traffic Information System) in 2018, we expected a small revolution of sorts. Gone were the days of neverending queues at the traffic department to renew or apply for drivers’ licences. For Gauteng residents at least. But things didn’t…
