My gamertag is more useful than a business card. I write about the tech industry, hardware, software, games, and motoring.

One of the most worrying features coming on next-gen consoles is the size… situation. Not the physical size of them. We’ll manage to fit ‘em even if they were fridge-sized. The PlayStation 5 just comes with about 700GB of usable storage space. And as we all know, games aren’t getting smaller.  Why? Because Sony’s next-gen console is fitted with a Solid State Drive (SSD), replacing the older HDD. This means games will load faster and basically eliminate loading screens, making the possibilities for world-shifting in seconds a real thing. This SSD is not particularly big, however. Which means there’s not…

South African’s love their sport. It’s one of the few commonalities that cross a load of social and economic lines. Watching live sport is how we bond, get together (well, not in 2020) and celebrate local sportspeople. We get it. The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) wants to bring that joy to South Africans at large by making more sports tournaments free to watch. There are a few snags in the plan, though.  The newly filed Draft Sports Broadcasting Services Amendment Regulations are now open for public comment. It’s aimed at making a range of sporting events more…

At this point, we’re not even surprised by the sheer amount weird and wonderful gadgets Xiaomi puts out. A first for us, we tested out a hairdryer under the Xiaomi’s subbrand called Jimmy. We don’t know who Jimmy is, but he produces some quality haircare devices, that’s for sure. Meet the Jimmy F6 negative ion hairdryer.  Keep in mind that we’re simple folk. I’ve used the same R300 hairdryer for some 10 years. It blows hot (or cold) air onto my scalp-appendages and makes it not-wet. But sometimes you need something more… robust and tech-infused. That’s what the Jimmy F6…

It’s probably not the main loss of the year, but the lack of physical events have hit the gaming industry quite hard. South African geeks have nowhere to go this year, but it’s not for lack of trying. Lucky for us, however, rAge Expo is pushing ahead with an all-digital event for the first time ever.  Obviously, this is nothing new by this stage of the pandemic. Many large expos and conferences have moved online, including Comic-Con South Africa. What makes this rAge great, however, is the fact that it doesn’t cost a cent to join in on the fun.…

We all know that one person who can’t stop tinkering with tiny little computers and gizmos. We are those people. Which is why this little Raspberry Pi keyboard is any tinkerer’s dream gadget. You know, because you always end up rummaging through old tech to find a keyboard to control your Raspberry Pi.  So this time, Raspberry Pi came up with an ingenious solution to this non-issue — the mini PC is built directly into a little keyboard. Called the Raspberry Pi 400, the new machine packs a quad-core 1.8GHz Broadcom processor, 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM, a gigabit Ethernet port,…

There’s nothing sweeter than a lekker data deal. South Africans fought their hands to the bone a year ago with the #datamustfall campaign. Following this, the Competition Commission ruled that mobile networks need to adjust pricing. They all did. But now MTN has announced some new big deals to try and convert more mobile users to its network.  Today, MTN announced its new data and voice plans tailored for the South African user. By that, we mean that they’re cheaper than before — something all South Africans can celebrate. These new “Mega Plans” contracts offer a few advantages: like 25GB/month…

We’ve made it to a world that functions almost solely on software. Many people can work from anywhere, apply for credit or track children’s’ whereabouts from a device. Travel back to the 90s and no-one would believe you. It’s been a long time coming, but Apple’s focusing increasingly on subscription services and software. Introducing: Apple One.  You’ve probably subscribed to one too many subscription services already, but Apple wants you to subscribe to one more. One that could help organise things slightly. Instead of having up to six of the things, you just let Tim Cook raid your piggy bank…
