The SA Revenue Service recently confirmed that it has started imposing VAT on subscriptions or payments on the popular content app OnlyFans. This means all OnlyFans content creators will see 15% slashed off their income, even though they’re being paid in US dollars.  This is another example of how disconnected the South African government and its service providers are with the new digital economy. We saw a similar disconnection with the Department of Communications’ draft policy to force all South Africans with smartphones to pay for TV licences.  SARS knows something we don’t OnlyFans is a subscription content service that…

The one downside of kicking WhatsApp from your app collection is losing all of your chat history. Because you may just, one day, need that Netflix password your sibling sent you in 2016. iOS and Android users will now be able to import their WhatsApp chat history into Telegram, which effectively solves that issue.  Telegram has seen an incremental increase in users following WhatsApp’s update to its terms of service, that will require users opt-in to have their data shared with Facebook. Many users jumped to Telegram without much knowledge of the service, and we even saw South Africans use…

If you need even more proof that deleting your Facebook account is probably a good idea, user phone numbers are currently being sold via a bot on Telegram.  According to new reports, a person that runs a bot on the newly popular messaging app Telegram claims to have phone numbers of 533 million Facebook users. Apparently, the numbers were pulled from a previous Facebook exploit that has been patched since. All of these numbers are now available for $20 a pop, with discounts for bulk options, obviously.  Facebook’s leaking Interestingly, however, the bot isn’t only in possession of spreadsheets filled…

Come May 15, WhatsApp users will have to accept the company’s updated terms and conditions or lose access to the most popular messaging app in the world. This week the deadline was extended from February 8 as concern and confusion over its data collection practices mounted.  Despite big tech’s best efforts to increase transparency in recent years, corporations like Facebook and Google have been found to secretly share customers’ private data with third-party advertisers. It’s easy to doubt their intentions when it comes to sharing personal data with some of the most powerful companies in the world. Whether or not…

In one of the wackiest developments of 2021 so far, the South African Revenue Service has launched its own web browser. Why, you ask? Because it’s the only place where citizens of South Africa can easily access eFiling and submit tax forms after Adobe killed off Flash Player officially in 2020.  The death of Flash was all but a surprise too. Back in 2017, tech firms including Microsoft and Google announced that they would kill off support for the plugin. That’s because newer technologies are ample and serve as far better foundations for new, richer content and applications. Even more,…

On a daily basis, our feeds are flooded with the shiniest, fastest, best new smartphones on the market. Most of them land in SA with a price tag that could easily go upwards of R20k, so we know they’ve got cash to spare for that advertising budget. But you know what? Sometimes you have to dig deeper to find more valuable gems, and that’s what we found in the new Nokia 8.3 5G.  Of course, Nokia brings back good memories of a simpler time, when smartphones had hideous little jackets and old men bought those ugly belts that have sleeves…
