My gamertag is more useful than a business card. I write about the tech industry, hardware, software, games, and motoring.

This week, Apple announced its latest mobile tech, including two iPads, four iPhones and one Watch. It’s a slimmer lineup than we would’ve liked, considering last year we saw the company reveal its brand new M1 chip and all the devices it comes in. This year’s event seemed slightly underwhelming by comparison. Except for one device, which made our week — the redesigned iPad Mini.  Lucky for everyone interested in an iPad that fits in your hand, iPad mini pre-orders have gone live in South Africa. The 64GB WiFi-only variation will cost you R9,000, while the 64GB LTE/WiFi option costs…

Everyone’s favourite action cam just got an upgrade. GoPro has just announced the Hero 10 Black cam, and considering how much we loved the previous iteration, we can’t wait to get our hands on this tiny shooter.  Go, go GoPro gadget Equipped with a brand new GP2 processor, the Hero 10 Black comes with increased shooting capabilities and functions. This includes, as we suspected in the previous rumours, capturing 5.3K resolution footage at 60fps, or the ability to shoot at 4K and 120fps. Of course, these ultra-fast shooting abilities are ideal for GoPro’s target audience: action sports aficionados.  A few…

The original Sonos Beam launched back in 2018 — so there must be a long list of newer tech available to pack into something similar. Meet the Sonos Beam Gen 2 soundbar. We absolutely adore (yes, still do) the OG Beam, so we can’t wait to see what its descendant has to offer.  Beaming with features Packed into a familiar housing, the Beam Gen 2 offers a few upgrades we’re keen to see in a soundbar. Things like Dolby Atmos and eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel) compatibility have made their way into the device. This is largely thanks to a…

Presuming Multichoice decides to go ahead with its unbundled premium subscription offering, DStv Flex customers will have the ability to add and remove certain content packs at will. Of course, the broadcaster hasn’t confirmed whether it’s launching Flex (or something similar) yet, but recent rumours point to it being considered. Historically, the broadcaster hasn’t offered users much in terms of choice — its various subscription packages offer either the full suite of channels or just a few of ‘em. Flex could bring more options in terms of flexibility, but it’ll still cost you a few hundred bucks.  DStv Flex-ing its…

We know, it sounds like a ‘choose your own adventure’ game. But DStv, the Multichoice-owned pay-TV subscription service is reportedly working on a premium package that’ll unbundle some of its sports and movie channels, giving their viewers the choice of what they want in their packages. Almost like Build-a-Bear but for DStv channels, right? According to Thinus Ferreira, the entertainment reporter, the pay-TV service iMultichoice is gauging interest in a more ‘flexible’ service called DStv Flex. It’ll give users more power in choosing what they want to watch on the platform.  “As part of a new possible DStv bouquet structuring…

The original Nintendo Switch console launched back in 2017, and since then gamers have had to rely on the 3.5 audio jack to blast that brilliant Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild score into their ears. Now, Ninty’s announced that it’s bringing Bluetooth audio output to its handheld for the first time via a software update.  We’re not sure how the feature’s been missing for so long, and now it’s miraculously making its way to the consoles. While OG Switch owners have every right to celebrate, they should know that there are certain limitations to the functionality and it…

What’s a launch day without some unexpected (who’re we kidding, it’s become so suspected) leaks of unannounced devices? As Apple’s putting the final touches on its digital launch stream for this evening, renders of the iPhone 13 range made their way to the internet.  Published by EVLeaks (because of course, it was), the renders don’t show much in terms of a physical distinction between the iPhone 12 and the upcoming iPhone 13 range. The design looks heavily influenced by the last generation of devices – but that’s kind of expected knowing Apple.  https://twitter.com/evleaks/status/1437693688193421313 One tiny distinction is the size of…

Joining the list of tech moguls who have their eyes (and wallets) set on outer space this week, is Steve Wozniak, the co-founder of Apple. While not a whole lot is known about the endeavour, Wozniak tweeted a short promotional video for the new space-faring company (well, that’s what we assume it does) called Privateer today.  https://twitter.com/stevewoz/status/1437234689786347523 Wozniak’s not keen on the space race While we know the company will have something to do with space, no one’s quite sure what yet. The promotional video drops a few one-liners about making the world a better place, but not much in…

The Chinese smartphone maker is gearing up to reveal its latest in smartphone tech at a global launch on 15 September. We don’t know much about the actual Mi 11T devices and their corresponding specs, but we do know that at least one of ‘em will sport 120W wired charging capability — which will be a first in a commercial smartphone.  Live fast, die young, eh Xiaomi? Since the news broke, many have raised concerns over the effect 120W charging will have on a sometimes oh-so-fragile smartphone battery. In an interview with The Verge, Xiaomi’s head of communications, Daniel Desjarlais…

WhatsApp voice notes can be controversial. Either you adore them or you won’t bother making one. Like, ever. Regardless of which group your preference puts you in, the messaging app’s newest incoming feature may add a new element of convenience to your life. Meet voice note transcription.  What(sApp)? Please repeat that? According to XDA Developers, the Facebook-owned app is working on a voice message transcription feature for iOS. It’ll automatically transcribe voice messages into text using speech recognition technology. At least, that’s if you choose to make use of the feature.  The feature will need special permission in iOS, so…
