My gamertag is more useful than a business card. I write about the tech industry, hardware, software, games, and motoring.

South African gaming and comic fans, best you mark 14-16 September 2018 in your diary, because Comic Con Africa is coming your way. The event will take place at the Kyalami Convention Centre and feature everything from comic books, competitive table-top gaming, eSports, anime and manga, to fantasy and series lore. The event is being organised by VS Gaming in association with Reed Exhibitions, the company behind most American Comic Conventions. There’ll also be cosplay, so best you get out that spandex Deadpool-suit and ready up. Or, if you haven’t started work on your costume now’s the time to change that.…

We’re less than a week from the official Samsung Galaxy S9 Unpacked event taking place in Barcelona and we can barely keep up with all of the leaks and rumours. It looks like we’ll probably know every key feature of the upcoming flagship before the curtain even lifts. And why should we have all the fun? So here, for your reading pleasure, is everything we know so far. We have covered most of the specs so far, but to recap — we know we’ll be seeing a Galaxy S9 and an S9+ model from the South Korean tech giant at…

Microsoft has launched party chat on their Xbox apps, which are available on Android and iOS, so now you can have a chat with your couch-potato friends while slaving away at work. The company started testing Xbox party chat in the Xbox mobile apps in December, and have now decided to officially launch the feature. It gives players (and not-at-the-moment players) the ability to voice chat with friends on Xbox Live, similar to the Discord mobile app. It’s definitely a useful feature if you don’t happen to be near your console or PC, or even if your headset isn’t working…

We have all heard the statistics — like 300 hours worth of uploads per minute and other nigh-incomprehensible numbers — and its safe to say that no person will be able to watch all of the video content on YouTube in one lifetime. Or even several. A ridiculous amount of new video content is uploaded to the website daily, and we can’t keep up. It’s literally impossible and that… could be a good thing.  Youtube is the go-to spot for any video-related endeavours. From entertainment to information and news, you can watch anything from how to cook a perfect lasagna…

The Resume Assistant gathers insights from millions of LinkedIn profiles and gives you examples of how others in similar roles describe their work experience. Then you can insert…

As if there was ever any doubt: The Call of Duty series is getting another sibling and, as is customary, it’s anticipated to drop later in 2018. If we were to take a totally ‘random’ stab at guessing the launch date, we’d put it at 2 November 2018. Activision isn’t one to mess with (any of) a winning formula.  Rumours concerning this year’s CoD have turned up early and it seems that we’re looking at a Black Ops IV. Gaming website Eurogamer has confirmed this speculation with multiple sources,  which is certainly enough for us to already be looking for the…

PlayStation has decided that your PS4 controller arsenal needs a (little) bit more colour and have announced two brand new varieties of our favourite controller. Don’t get too excited – it’s not like PlayStation are going to release a neon pink Dualshock soon but the company have decided that their loyal fans deserve a variety to choose from — something Xbox has been providing for years. Technically these count as special edition controllers but essentially are part of the range that will be available worldwide which means: yes, we will have them in South Africa when the time comes. In 2016…

Just about every parent in South Africa has asked their adolescent children how the youngsters cope without the magic of satellite television. Once the folks find out how cheap Netflix and Showmax actually are, though, they tend to immediately get on board. But how do you make the change from broadcast to streaming? Step one: Cancel your DStv account. Why drop the DStv account, though? What did they ever do to us? Well, DStv has come under fire for continuously repeating old shows and not living up the expectations generated by what users pay each month (up to R790 per…

Have you ever wondered at the power that resides in your hands? Just lift up your hand. Yes, right there. Now watch as this drone follows your hand’s every move. Why? Because it is equipped with 3D tracking tech that allows the pilot to put down the controller and wave their hands in the air instead. We saw this tech demonstrated at the South African launch of DJI’s new drone, the Mavic Air. This fine piece of equipment was created with the travel and photography enthusiast in mind, to be ultra-portable while including impressive AI tech and camera features. It…

Want the foldability of the DJI Mavic with the compact dimensions of the DJI Spark, along with the smarts of all of DJI’s finest quadcopters combined, and 4K video capabilities? Of course you do. DJI’s latest — and most compelling — attempt to part us from our hard-earned cash is just what the drone enthusiast ordered. It’s called the Mavic Air. We loved the Spark’s dimensions, but because it didn’t fold up like the bigger Mavic and only offered 15 minutes of fly-time and HD video, the Mavic Pro remained our most-recommended drone… until now. DJI says the Mavic Air is…
