Previous instalments in Asus’ ROG line of gaming phones were impressive enough already. Attachable cooling systems, motion sensor air triggers, light-up cases, side USB C jacks… pretty high-tech stuff. But a recent video on Weibo pointed out by GSMArena revealed that the ROG Phone 5 has an intriguing new feature: a second screen.
So how does it work?
On the back of the phone is a small, slanted, secondary display. The video demonstrates the diagonal screen’s ability to show notifications, such as alerts from games or an incoming call, even while the ROG Phone 5 is face down. Whether this is all fact of fiction is still unknown.
The teaser also provides a view of the phone face up. The screen has a small bezel, so there’s plenty of room for the display, but apart from that, not much else is shown off. Specs-wise, the ROG Phone 5 is expected to, like its predecessor, boast a 144Hz refresh rate and a massive 6,000mAh battery with quick charging capabilities. It’s also expected to pack Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 888 chipset, which means that it will be faster than previous models and will also tout 5G.
That’s about all we can say for now. There’s not much information on all of the ROG Phone 5’s features yet, and Asus has yet to release anything official. But it’s an exciting piece of tech, so we’ll be looking out for any news on it in the coming weeks. Like previous versions of Asus’ gaming handsets, we’re not sure whether it’ll launch in South Africa just yet.
