There are plenty of Lego sets to go around. Narrow that search down to video game consoles, and you’re still overwhelmed with choice. Unless you’re specifically looking for an original Xbox, that is. Mattel has stepped in to fill that oddly shaped hole in the market, bringing to life a 1:1 scale brick set of the earliest Halo player from 2001.
Brick by brick
It may not be Lego, but we’re betting that the ‘Microsoft Xbox Building Toy Kit’ (it doesn’t quite roll off the tongue, does it?) will scratch all the same itches. 3,509 pieces will need assembling before it becomes the ‘interactive’ set that Mattel has promised. The set also includes a controller for a complete system.
The ‘interactive’ bit has to do with three dioramas encompassing some of the more iconic titles. Halo: Combat Evolved, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, and Psychonauts — all of which come with their own screen, characters, and other bits to complete certain scenes from the games inside the console. Certain buttons on the controller will trigger a light show for each diorama, while opening the console plays the original boot-up sound.
It looks like a faithful recreation of the iconic console, except in brick form. In theory, it’ll appeal to just about any Xbox fan out there. In reality, though, it’ll only attract the gamers with money-shaped holes burnt through their pockets. Mattel’s charging a hefty $325 (∼R5,260) to own one, which outpaces the $300 launch price of the OG console. Yeesh.
