It wasn’t long ago that we got to play with the Motorola Edge 70. The company has gone one better, announcing its Edge 70 Max. As you might expect, it’ll outperform one of our favourite phones this year by a considerable margin. If Motorola can keep pricing as reasonable as the mid-ranger, we’ll be even more impressed.
The only real question we have is whether the phone will launch in this country. It has turned up on Motorola’s Indian website, where it’ll go on sale on 20 July. If there’s a local launch, it’ll be delayed by some margin. Hopefully, at least for us, it won’t be too much of one.
Edge 70 Max power
The Edge 70 Max goes especially hard on its processor. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, the same chipset powering this year’s most powerful phones, is resident in Moto’s latest. 256GB of storage is standard, at least in India, with either 8GB or 12GB of RAM acting in support.
Up front, there’s a 6.8in 1,440 x 3,168 OLED display. It’s a shade larger than the Edge 70’s screen, but outstrips it with a 144Hz refresh rate and a maximum brightness of 7,000 nits. Gorilla Glass 7i acts as protection for the front and rear panels. Further protections include IP68 and IP69 ratings.
As with the standard Edge 70, the cameras are decent but not exceptional. They are, however, better here. A 50MP main (made by Sony) with optical image stabilisation and an 8MP ultrawide will get the job done. There’s also a light sensor in the rear array. In front, a 32MP effort keeps users looking pretty on social media.
As far as pricing goes, the Edge 70 Max might actually impress as much as the less-capable version. The base version launches for the Indian equivalent of just under R10,000 (that’ll be the 8GB/256GB model), with the pricier one coming in closer to… R10,500? Okay, now Motorola better launch this one here.
