Would you rather buy a decent OLED TV, a brand-new games console, and a couple of games — or a few extra terabytes of storage? If you even have to ask, you’re probably not the target market for SanDisk’s new 8TB SSD for the PS5, which had our jaw on the floor once we caught sight of the egregious $3,000 (∼R50,000) price tag.
We’re past April Fool’s, SanDisk
The SanDisk Optimus GX Pro 850P NVMe SSD, as it’s known, is a rebrand of the WD_Black name that’s passed through Stuff’s doors in the past. That little accessory, built with the PS5 in mind, was only a 1TB add-on, massively improving our console’s storage capabilities. For some, that still isn’t enough. Enter SanDisk’s Optimus GX Pro 850P, which is actually on special at the time of writing — down from $3,700.
That price makes a little more sense when you remember we’re in the midst of an ongoing memory crisis. It’s already claimed Apple, which confirmed that its prices would be seeing a bump — all thanks to AI. Not that it makes it okay for SanDisk to charge such prices for optional storage. Mind you, people will pay up.

The Optimus GX Pro 850P is a PCIe 4.0 drive which slots right into your PS5’s M.2 slot. Installation proved easy when we tried it, but it’s still worth familiarising yourself with the process. Once it’s in, SanDisk promises Read/Write speeds of 7,200MB/s and 6,600MB/s, respectively.
