Canon’s PowerShot range has turned 30, which means it’s time for some nostalgia. The Japanese company has reissued its PowerShot G7 X Mark III as a limited anniversary edition. It makes some cosmetic changes, but remains largely the same camera that you can still buy… basically everywhere.
The anniversary edition of the compact point-and-shoot is a little scarcer. Even though it’s only supposed to become available from 28 April this year, pre-orders on Canon’s American site have topped out. Maybe South Africa’s outlets will have to deal with less rabid fans (besides you, obviously) and the PowerShot G7 X Mark III update will remain in stock long enough to buy one.
PowerShot G7 – you sank my battleship
This incarnation of the PowerShot 600, the camera that started it all, only has a visual upgrade over the current G7 X Mark III. A new ‘graphite’ shade for the body, an updated colour for the front ring, a 30th anniversary logo, and a similarly branded presentation box are where buyers will see differences. A Peak Design strap and a 32GB SD card are also included in the bundle.
Inside, the Powershot G7 X Mark III remains the same as when it first launched in 2019. The 304-gram body hosts a 20.1MP sensor, backed by a DIGIC 8 image processor, and the integrated 24 to 100mm f/1.8-2.8 lens will help you get your shots at a distance. Up to 4.2x, you’re getting optical zoom. Beyond that point, you’re using Canon’s ZoomPlus digital solution.
The G7 X Mark III features in-body stabilisation, a 3in flip-up touchscreen, microphone inputs, and it shoots in bursts of up to 20fps (30fps in Raw Burst Mode), with 4K/30fps possible in video. Right now, buying one costs R17,000.
Not so the limited edition — that’ll set you back just over R21,000 ($1,300), but we all know how American pricing neglects to add tax until you get to the till (except in some states). If and when it arrives here, expect it to be a fair bit more than the currently available version.
