Stuff covers all things Lego, but usually the kind that can easily fit into the backseat of your car. You’ll have trouble doing that here, though. Lego South Africa has revealed what is easily the biggest build brought to the country: a life-sized 192,937-piece Technic Mercedes-AMG F1, shown off at the Zwartkops Raceway this week.
Lego’s all bricked up
Arguably more impressive than the eight hours Lego claims it took to build the thing (in Singapore, no less) was getting it to South Africa in one piece. Well, it’s here now, and it’ll be shipped around the country for all to see. Based on the same 1,642-piece set, this scaled-up model measures 5.1m in length and weighs 913kg.
Well, not all. Lego reckons the Mercedes-AMG F1 build will make a couple of pit stops around Gauteng, KZN, and the Western Cape. First, it’ll come to Nelson Mandela Square from 16 November ’til 3 December. It’ll then move to Gateway Shopping Centre from 12 December to 5 January. Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront will get its turn from 15-25 January 2026. And lastly, it’ll head back to Gauteng at Sandton City from 5-28 February.
These pop-ups aren’t only for gawking at Lego’s Mercedes creation. The Danish brick company said that “fans can challenge their speed and reflexes” with some fun activities on the day. There’ll be a build station to design your own cars (in miniature, of course), a “high-speed ramp with precision timing systems” complete with a leaderboard, and finally a reflex challenge. Whether anything is up for grabs remains to be seen.
