Samsung isn’t exactly known for its generosity, but a new price drop for South African customers pushes its most affordable smartphones even further into the budget category. Pricing is valid when purchasing directly from Samsung’s online and physical stores, plus partner retailers, and affects four smartphones.
The phones are the Galaxy A05, A05s, A06, and A16 — Samsung’s bottom order, sure, but the pricing now reflects that even more.
Priced into Samsung’s market
The Galaxy A05 loses R100 from its R2,000 recommended price, giving you access for R1,900. For the money, buyers get a 50MP main camera, a 6.7in display (not Samsung’s best but it’s less than two grand), 64GB of storage, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
The R2,300 Galaxy A06 (formerly R2,500) offers a slight performance increase, but it’s largely the same phone — the screen, cameras, and storage remain the same — but it’s also two hundred bucks cheaper than it was.
Less tempting is the R100 price drop for the Galaxy A05s, which now retails for R2,800. The major differentiator here is the increased storage. 128GB of internal space is yours for the taking (and for relatively little money).
Venturing into ‘proper’ phones is the Galaxy A16, which finally upgrades that 6.7in display to a Super AMOLED (it’s still not the company’s best display, but we’ll take it). A third camera sensor enters the spec sheet, leaving owners with the 50MP main, a 2MP macro, and then a shiny new 5MP ultrawide to play with. It still leans heavily on Samsung’s main sensor, but the numbers are a tad larger. That phone will run you R3,500 instead of its former R4,000 price point.
The pricing updates went into effect on 1 June, and there’s no indication that they’ll return to their previous levels. If you’ve been on the fence or are just on a strict budget, Samsung might have something that’ll suit your pocket.
