Following the abysmal launch that Battlefield 2042 faced and is still trying to recover from, it isn’t surprising that EA wants to make a few changes. The game publisher announced on Thursday that it would be creating a ‘Battlefield Universe’ that will span multiple titles and platforms under different developers.
This is a rather transparent step in the same direction that Ubisoft took with the Assassin’s Creed franchise. It seems that Battlefield will henceforth follow the games-as-a-service model, instead of the uninspired standalone games we’ve been subjected to in recent years.

EA has also made some management changes. DICE General Manager Oskar Gabrielson will be leaving the company to pursue…something else, we guess. Gabrielson leaves behind a pretty substantial legacy. If you’ve ever had the pleasure of using Battlelog or enjoyed playing Battlefield 3, you have him to thank.
Respawn Entertainment’s Vince Zampella will be stepping into the role of ‘Big Boss of Battlefield’ and Halo designer Marcus Lehto will head up a new team that’ll work on “injecting more storytelling into the Battlefield universe”.
While we didn’t get any specifics about any new games or experiences in the Battlefield franchise, EA told GameSpot that developer DICE, Ripple Effect and Lehto’s new team will work together on improving Battlefield 2042.

They’ve certainly got their work cut out for them. Let’s hope the improvements, updates and patches go down better than the most recent update the game received. Tuesday’s update to Battlefield 2042 all but broke the game further.
Many players face an error when attempting to join a server that reads ‘unable to load persistence data’. They would then be taken back to the main menu. Those that were able to join found the horizontal mouse axis wasn’t working so no more turning left or right for them. It’s no wonder then that the game has lost half its player base since launch and amassed over 51,000 negative reviews on Steam.
