Remember when all you wanted was a new Huawei smartphone with Google Mobile Services baked in? We do too. The Honor 50 might as well be that smartphone, and it’s heading to South Africa soon.
Honor may be split from its parent company, a side-effect of the troubled relationship between Huawei and Donald Trump, but the designs and hardware might as well just be Huawei by another name. It’s not like they went out and bought all new facilities and hired new staff, after all.
Hyped for the Honor 50
The company’s latest handset, the 50, launched earlier this year in China. Now there’s confirmation that it’s headed elsewhere. To over 40 countries, in fact, and yes, South Africa is one of them.
But don’t get too excited — The Honor 50 has been confirmed for a lot of major markets, including the UK, France, Germany, and Spain, as well as the UAE, Egypt, and South Africa, but local pricing and availability aren’t known yet. International pricing, on the other hand, is.
If you want to lay hands on Honor’s new Snapdragon 778G-powered, 6.57in 120Hz OLED screen-having, 66W fast-charging, 4,300mAh battery-having smartphones, it’ll cost you at least €529 — or about R10,000. That’s for the starter 6GB/128GB storage version. There’s also a €599 version (R10,500) that’ll ship with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.
Both versions have a quad-camera array that… won’t be quite as high-quality as Huawei’s efforts in that line. There’s a main 108MP sensor, as well as an 8MP and dual 2MP backups doing all the usual stuff like adding ultrawide support.
Also on the way is an Honor 50 Lite, which is priced from €299 — that’s around R5,300 here at home. If your interest is piqued there, the Lite is also set to launch in SA. At some point. We’ll let you know the details as we get hold of them. Stay tuned.
