When it rains it pours, right? Twitter’s been at odds with India pretty continuously recently, and has added another log to the flame that is the government’s contempt for the micro-blogging platform: it goofed up its world map.
Twitter vs India: cage match
The company displayed Ladakh and the northern parts of Kashmir and Jammu as separate countries to India as a whole. The cartographical muck-up appeared first in the ‘Tweet Life’ segment of the career page, reports The Next Web. It was corrected soon after users began pointing it out.
A lawyer filed a complaint against Twitter India’s head, Manish Mashwari, who only recently entered a legal battle with the Ghaziabad police force over a violation of India’s stricter content policies for social media platforms.
Last week a tweet containing a video showing the assault of an elderly Muslim man on a Ghaziabad street went viral, and Mashwari was confronted by the city’s police force for not removing it. The tweet, and by extension Mashwari, was accused of inciting communal unrest.
While a map screw-up isn’t grounds for a new case against Twitter, it certainly won’t help put out the fires already burning. The Next Web reports that while the government may want to revoke Twitter’s safe-haven status for failing to adhere to the country’s new content rules, ultimately it’s the court’s call. Another India-related slip-up definitely won’t make it more sympathetic, though.
