Someone, please tell diesel drivers to take a quiet moment to enjoy this one. After months of fuel price uncertainty and increasingly painful trips to the pumps, November 2026 is bringing some much-needed relief to South African motorists. The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR) published the official fuel price adjustments today, confirming a massive R1+ decrease for diesel prices, thanks to government intervention.
Petrol drivers, manage your expectations…
Petrol prices…weren’t so lucky. Owing to the higher prices of diesel around the country, R3/l was cut from the General Fuel Levy (GFL), while petrol only saw a smaller R1.50/l cut. This has, at least, afforded the country’s petrol drivers a R0.01/l price decrease. With the way prices have been rising of late, we’ll take what we can get.
October was a pretty rough month, all things considered. The global price of oil continued to climb, while the Rand weakened compared to the Dollar throughout the month. The Central Energy Fund (CEF), in conjunction with the DMPR, tracks these factors to determine the price of fuel locally. Following pressure from SA motorists and industries alike, the National Treasury confirmed it would drop a cool R10 billion to provide relief.
“The combined cumulative Petrol and Diesel Slate balances at the end of September 2026 amounted to a negative balance of R 15.876 billion. In line with the provisions of the Self-Adjusting Slate Levy Mechanism, a Slate Levy of 135.84 c/l will be implemented into the price structures of Petrol and Diesel with effect from 04 November 2026.”
