If there were any doubt about Samsung’s smart glasses launching soon, the newest leak puts it to rest. Or should we say ‘leak’? The South Korean company has never suffered from a security problem, and every early reveal is very obviously orchestrated. These Google-partnered smart glasses are no different.
The folks at SammyGuru were the recipients of the company’s latest round of stealthy focus-group testing. All of Samsung’s upcoming frame options, as well as the glasses’ internal specs, have dropped. They’ll only become official this November, but we can all have an early look before then.
All eyes on Samsung
If you pop over to SammyGuru, you’ll find all the available frame options. It’s no secret that Gentle Monster and Warby Parker are involved. In its initial announcement, Samsung didn’t unveil all the visual options. But we’re less concerned about what the smart glasses look like. How they perform, on the other hand…
That’s also all known. The smart glasses will land packing a Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 chipset, 2GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage on board. There’s a 12MP camera built into the frame, capable of shooting video up to 30fps. How well it’s secured remains to be er… seen. The glasses’ battery should go for nine hours on a charge, with the charging case giving wearers (on paper) three full days of use. Since you’re not likely to be wearing them at night, we’d put the uptime at roughly a week.
Four microphones and two open-ear speakers inside the frame handle Gemini integration. Wearers can summon Google’s AI for various nefarious purposes. And, probably, real-time language translation. Then, there’s a slight catch. Some of the smart glasses features will require a specific Samsung smartphone to function. You’ll need an S-class smartphone or one of the foldables, but the glasses are also supposed to function with other model phones, including Apple’s devices.
The only thing missing is pricing and availability. Gentle Monster frames are confirmed for the American and South Korean markets, while Warby Parker’s options are USA-only. Other regions aren’t known yet. We’ll find those details out in a few short weeks.
