Readers with reasonably long memories might recall that Honor originally belonged to Huawei. The two brands split apart as a result of the latter’s bout of American sanctions. Now, it seems, Huawei has gained enough emotional distance to try again.
There are reports, via a Chinese leak, that suggest another sub-brand is in the offing. As far as the details go, the new brand will be localised in China. That doesn’t rule out an international release. It just means it may take some time to appear outside Huawei’s native country.
Starlight of Huawei’s life
The leak, via Dingjiao Digital, according to GSM Arena, reckons that the new smartphone sub-brand will be called Xingmang. It doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue in Western markets, but its translation might. Xingmang translates to ‘starlight,’ a brand we could easily see the company’s Nova smartphones transitioning to.
Especially since the range is Huawei’s value line. The same thing happened with Honor when it was under the company’s aegis. Other details about the pending sub-brand launch suggest mid-range phones that drop overly premium features but keep the company’s HarmonyOS and XMAGE tech. That… sounds awfully like the existing Nova lineup. Of course, it’s just as possible that Huawei will spin off Nova for overseas sales instead of opting for Starlight.
There’s also the possibility of other products entering the pending sub-brand’s catalogue. Wearables, headphones, and possibly tablets with a similar mid-range flavour all make sense. We’ll likely know more before the end of October, which is when Huawei is expected to make Xingmang official.
