Huawei is expected, before the end of this month, to make its Mate 90 series official at a Chinese event. Before that takes place — the most likely announcement date is now 29 September — the company has something else planned. Set for 28 September, we should see a car take the stage alongside Huawei executives.
That doesn’t mean the Chinese brand has started manufacturing. Certainly not in the way its rival Xiaomi has. The vehicle in question is the Luxeed RX, a collaborative effort between Chery’s luxury arm and the Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance (HIMA).
Huawei plants a Luxeed
HIMA is one of several groups Huawei belongs to as part of its vehicle collaborations. This event, announced by company executive director Yu Chengdong, will probably cover the software, intelligence, and vision systems inside Luxeed’s upcoming crossover SUV electric vehicle. There’s also bound to be a lot said about its drive systems. That makes sense, since Huawei made them.
Most of the specs for the Luxeed RX are already well known. Both the front induction and rear synchronous motors come via the company we know best for their smartphones. Of the two, the 160kW front drive is brand-new for this vehicle. The rear 277kW motor has previously appeared in other vehicles Huawei has partnered with, including the AITO M9 and the Stelato G9.
Other features of the vehicle include HarmonyOS-driven cockpit features, L3 autonomous driving functions (with advanced sensor tech Huawei is probably dying to explain), and LiDAR sensing and vision advancements. The Luxeed RX has a China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC) specified range of between 700km and 850km on a charge, but the tech-maker presenting it next week will probably want to focus on the bits it had a hand in creating.
Given how advanced the EV seems, it probably won’t appear here any time soon. Luxeed vehicles have been rumoured for South Africa since 2024, but nothing official has been heard yet. It would be quite impressive for the brand’s RX (also known as the R7) to be the first to arrive. We probably won’t find that news out next week, however.
