Of course Meta’s version of an AI image generator pushes the boundaries of privacy, as always.
Unless a public Instagram account opts out, all of its images can be used by Muse Images to generate AI images. Muse Image is available on Instagram and WhatsApp, while Muse Video is forthcoming.
Sigh.
I haven’t used Instagram for years, but now I have to go into its settings and opt out of this new default setting so that its AI doesn’t use my images.
Sigh.
Not that wholesale copyright theft isn’t the default setting for the artificial intelligence industry, which built its large-language models (LLMs) by scraping copyrighted content from the internet for training.
As I have written before, the whole basis of the current AI industry is built on copyright fraud. But more about that another time.
Of course, the image reuse was only revealed in a blog post the day after Muse Image was released this week.
“If you have a public account, other Instagram users may be able to create new reels, posts or stories that reuse part or all of your published photos, videos or reels in features,” Instagram wrote. This includes remixes, sequences, templates and stickers.
Scarily, it warns: “People may be able to create content with your Instagram content using AI features at Meta. Depending on the settings of the other user, this means that your reused content may be discoverable in search engine results.”
Oh great.
There goes Mark Zuckerberg pushing the boundaries of privacy.

Given the controversies around AI chatbot Grok’s creation of sexualised images of women and children, and unapologetically so, this should especially worry parents.
The quickest way to opt out is to make your Instagram account private.
If you want to keep it public but prevent your images from being used, go to Settings > Sharing and reuse and turn off the three settings that prevent other people from sharing your posts, reels or stories.
Good luck navigating these coming AI waves.
