Vivo’s X-series smartphones are typically fantastic slabs of camera hardware, and the upcoming X300 isn’t expected to be any different. But where do you go when you’ve already got a 200MP camera sensor stuck inside the main array?
You add another one, of course. The still-murky smartphone series will launch in vanilla, Pro, and Ultra guises, with the latter possibly sporting dual 200MP rear sensors, along with a 50MP ultrawide lens to round out the set.
X300 ready for launch?
Why you’d need 500 megapixels of camera power in a single phone — the X300 Ultra will supposedly also feature a 50MP selfie camera — isn’t explored by the rumour mill, but it’s probably the move to make when you’ve reached the upper limits for a single sensor. Reports suggest that Vivo will stick with a conventional 200MP for its main lens (with a 1/1/4in sensor), paired with a 200MP 85mm periscope telephoto. A customised version of one of Samsung’s ISOCELL sensors is thought to be the hardware responsible.
Elsewhere, details of the X300 and its Pro version’s screens have emerged. Since Vivo product Manager Han Boxiao revealed these, we can bet on their accuracy. These will feature the slimmest bezels ever on a Vivo smartphone, thanks in part to LIPO (Low-Injection Pressure Over-molding) and BOE Q10 Plus panels. Screen lighting can be switched between 2160Hz PWM dimming or DC dimming at full brightness.

The X300 lineup will feature Zeiss Master and Zeiss Natural colour technology, which should pair nicely with the Zeiss T* lens coatings Vivo will use for its latest flagships.
A launch date or price for any of the phones remains a mystery, but the Vivo X series tends to drop near the end of the year. We’d be a little cautious of pricing as well. The X200 Pro launched at R40,000 in South Africa, so we really don’t want to see what the X300 Ultra would cost.
