If Meta’s Threads app is where you go for your social media fix, you may want to think about changing that. Apparently, mimicking the essence of Twitter/X wasn’t enough for Meta, for the company is now introducing ads on Threads to “all eligible advertisers globally” with further plans to show them in “select markets at launch.”
Make way for the new Threads

The change will doubtless come as a shock to anybody lacking a decent pair of eyes. Of course Meta was going to introduce ads into Threads at some point. Hell, it’s right in the name. That’s not to mention Instagram head Adam Mosseri confirming the change in 2024, in addition to an official Meta blog post ad back in January.
“I get why people have concerns, but at the end of the day we’re a business and Threads needs to make enough money to pay for the people and servers that it takes to run the service and provide it to people for free,” he said.

Meta didn’t mention which markets would be included in this initial rollout stage, though Meta spokesperson Matthew Tye later confirmed that at least 30 countries would be involved at first, including the US, according to The Verge. You’ll be able to spot a Thread-generated ad within your feed thanks to a ‘Sponsored’ label found next to the account name. That’s in addition to the covert #ad posts that already plague the app.
