Today is the day. The day that Geoff Keighley walks onto the big stage in LA, and utters the most beautiful words ever spoken, calculated to get the blood flowing: “Silksong is now available.” That’s not technically true. While this year’s Game Awards are scheduled for Thursday, 12 December, it’s a different case for South Africa.
If you’re serious about catching a front-row seat to the Astro Bot award ceremony, you’ll need to make sure coffee is a flowin’ and the fridge is stocked with your energy beverage of choice. The Game Awards, hosted by Geoff Keighley, will go live on all the usual platforms at 19h30 ET. For us Saffas, that’s 02h30 on Friday, 13 December.
The Game Awards: What to expect when you’re expecting (Silksong)
On the menu this year is the usual hours-long, uh, height-measuring content to determine which game was the best. Sprinkled in between all the back-patting are a couple of announcements for new games – though news on what those might be at this stage is slim. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier reckons the show will be worth staying up for, however, stating that at least two of those will leave watchers saying “Holy Sh*t”.
So that rules out Borderlands 4. Speaking on the Kinda Funny podcast, Schreier’s comments amount to: “…I know about a couple of announcements that’ll be there, and they would qualify as big announcements… I think there’s a good chance that you’ll see one or two teaser trailers for a game that is like 2026 or even later…”
“…there are at least two things that will make you guys reacting be like holy sh*t, like, I can’t believe this thing is here. At least two things, I’ll say that.”
Personally, that puts us in mind of the long-awaited The Elder Scrolls VI or, dare we say it, Half-Life 3 (confirmed?!). As for the games we know will make some sort of appearance thanks to developer confirmation Dying Light: The Beast, Borderlands 4, Warframe: 1999, and Mafia: The Old Country. We’re also awaiting a full trailer for HBO’s The Last of Us season 2, a poster for which was posted earlier today.
The nominations for the Game of the Year 2024 are as follows:
- Astro Bot – Team Asobi
- Balatro – LocalThunk
- Black Myth: Wukong – Game Science
- Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree – From Software
- Final Fantasy VII Rebirth – Square Enix
- Metaphor: ReFantazio – Studio Zero
