Some iPhone users have spotted a new arrival on the app store, a standalone app for Google Gemini. Gemini has long been integrated into the Google Search bar, but now users can access Gemini Live directly through the app, giving users greater flexibility in how they use the AI platform.
Google Gemini, coming soon to an iPhone near you
This update allows Google AI enthusiasts access straight from their Home page with a Gemini icon. Since the release of the generative AI platform, iPhone users have had to open the Google app and switch over to the Gemini tab above. Additionally, in September the Google app’s home screen widget was updated with customisable shortcuts to get direct access to Gemini.
Google Gemini’s iOS App Store page shows the ability to access Gemini Live. This is still unavailable in the main Google app. Some users have already shown themselves showing the app’s voice experience. Gemini can also use the Live Activity function to remain active while you focus on other tasks.
There’s only been one report (for now) of Gemini app’s download availability for a user in the Philippines. Anywhere else is showing the “This app is currently not available in your country or region” message. Google seems to be sticking to a slow rollout, testing the app in a few regions first.
Right now, Gemini on iOS through the Google app is functionally as capable as gemini.google.com. The UI still lags behind its Android counterpart. The hope is that the standalone app allows for faster and more frequent updates from Google.
