You haven’t truly earned that R65/m Spotify subscription if you’ve never had the “We noticed a new login to your account” email pop up in the dead of night before citing some location in India followed by a desperate scramble to find a new password you haven’t yet used before (and will promptly forget the following week). But if the reports from Reddit users are true, 2FA (two-factor authentication) on Spotify should finally end that.
Two-factor Spotify can’t hurt you:
Well, we say “should” because apparently, Spotify hasn’t quite figured out the whole 2FA thing entirely yet. It’s at least opted for an email delivery system rather than the archaic SMS system still widely used across the internet, though it stumbles right at the finish line. Many, ourselves included, have yet to see the feature appear on our accounts despite two login attempts on a smartphone and laptop, each.
Those few who do have the feature (accounts are seemingly chosen at random to receive the extra security) have reported that it hardly ever works, only occasionally requiring a six-digit code before permitting entry. There’s also no way to turn the feature on/off in the settings of your app – or any way to switch up how your 2FA codes are delivered. You’re locked into the email system from the get-go.

As for when you can expect 2FA to hit your devices, Spotify hasn’t said. Nor has it commented on whether it’ll ever get around to introducing more sophisticated 2FA methods such as third-party apps in the future. Oddly enough, Spotify’s creator accounts already employ all those features missing from the app’s ‘main’ version, such as toggleable settings, and the choice to use SMS or a third-party authenticator app to receive codes.
The functionality is there. Spotify just needs to evolve the version it’s shipping to customers. We wouldn’t be surprised if Daniel Ek tried forcing yet another fee on users to unlock deeper 2FA protection.
