You don’t need 24GB of RAM in a smartphone but it’s about to become an option

Nubia RAM

Yes, smartphone RAM is important for the smooth running of the device. Ask anyone how their 1GB-packing handset is doing these days for a blistering example of that. But cranking it up to 24GB might be stretching the ‘bigger is better’ concept a smidge.

Still, that’s a thing now. You’ll have to be keen on smartphone brand Nubia’s Red Magic 8S Pro + gaming smartphone and you’ll have to buy it from China (because it’s not available here) but you can officially have 24GB of RAM in your smartphone. If you really want to.

RAM it down up

Nubia is making no claims about its highest-spec device that we can understand but we’re familiar enough with the numbers. The Red Magic 8S Pro lineup is packing some serious hardware but it’s the Pro+ model that has the option to spec the device all the way up to 24GB/1TB. For a smartphone, that’s slightly mental. For a laptop, it would still be impressive. Being priced at ¥7,500 (about R20,000) makes the feat even more eyebrow-raising.

The brand has a thing for making bonkers devices and the rest of the specs here live up to the tendency. The stock Red Magic 8S Pro uses a slightly overclocked Snapdragon 8+ Gen 2 processor. GSMArena points out that this is the same spec as Samsung’s custom chip but without the branding. So much for exclusivity, hey Samsung? This phone can spec up to 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, features a 6,000mAh battery with 80W charging, and a 6.8in AMOLED display.

There’s a 3.5mm headphone jack and the USB-C port outputs video, in case you want to put this gaming hardware to the test on a larger screen. The phone outputs DTS:X Ultra audio from its onboard speakers too, so there’s that. Given that Nubia’s phones are designed to play games, there’s an enhanced ICE 12 cooling system that uses 5W/mK thermal paste and tweaks the air duct. The internal fan features RGB across all models because of course it does.

The Nubia Red Magic 8S Pro+ features most of the same specs. Besides that absolutely mad RAM option, there’s also a smaller 5,000mAh battery here, plus 165W fast charging. Whether you’ve got your eye on the stock or Plus models, there are three colour options to choose from. The Aurora model, for both, is the highest-spec option but there’s also Platinum and Midnight to select from. Because it’s gaming hardware.
