Eskom confirms Stage 2 load shedding is likely tonight

Eskom Load Shedding

We’re sorry we had to be the ones to tell you, but Eskom has confirmed the strong possibility of implementing load shedding today. Don’t panic just yet, there’s still a chance to escape load shedding. Although they’re pretty slim.

“Due to the shortage of generation capacity, Stage 2 load shedding might be implemented at short notice between 16:00 and 24:00 over the next three days,” Eskom said in a tweet.

Get ready, we’re facing Stage 2 load shedding

Eskom is blaming the possible load shedding on its shortage of generation capacity (duh?). It also cites delays in returning generation units at Koeberg, Arnot and Kusile power stations to service as an issue. Medupi, Hendrina and Camden power stations were also not able to produce power recently. Majuba Power Station has two units that “exacerbated the power constraints”. Eskom didn’t go into further detail about the problems but just wanted to let us know they may take our power away. How kind of them. Overall, it’s not looking very good for Eskom right now.

The supplier does believe that other power stations will come back online in the coming days – which could be our saving grace. Since this is Eskom we’re talking about, don’t hold your breath. Rather be prepared for Stage 2 at 16h00 this afternoon. We’ll keep you updated about the possibility of Stage 2, or even Stage 3. We aren’t sure yet just how bad the situation over there is. Everyone will know by 16h00, good or bad.
