Apple’s gone ahead and announced the second generation of its own in-house silicon. It has also revealed the first machines to get M2; a MacBook Air and a 13in Macbook Pro. But that’s never going to be enough for our benevolent tech overlord, is it?
So it shouldn’t be surprising that there’s a batch of other M2 hardware on the horizon. Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman, who spends an awful lot of time knowing things in advance, has details of what’s coming up.
Taking the M2
It shouldn’t be surprising at all that Apple’s launching M2 versions of most of its product lineup. Even so, there are some surprises in store. An all-new MacBook Air is apparently in the offing. Specifically, a 15in Air, powered by the company’s newest processor.
How much it’ll differ in respects other than the size… that’s another story. It’ll probably follow the same form factor as 2022’s 13in M2 MacBook Air, with straighter edges, but don’t expect anything revolutionary. And don’t expect it this year, either. A 15in Air, if it turns up at all, will only hit the market in 2023.
There’s also talk of a new 12in MacBook. You know, a little like the 12in MacBook that used to exist? Yeah, Apple’s apparently working on a new one of those, because canceling things and bringing them back is very 2022. Little is known about this machine, except that the soonest we might see it is late 2023. It’ll more likely turn up in 2024, if at all.
There’s also a Max version of the M2 processor coming, according to Gurman’s report. It’ll apparently feature up to 12 CPU cores and up to 38 GPU cores. That’s a fair jump on M1 Max’s 10 CPU/32 GPU count. If true, we can expect performance to jump at least a little. At least.
