Vodacom is teaming up with Viu to give customers free data with subscriptions

Vodacom and Viu South Africa have joined forces to give Vodacom customers free data along with their Viu subscription plans. When signing up for Viu, Vodacom customers will be given additional data to enjoy Viu on the go.

Viu is a subscription-based streaming service that originated in Hong Kong and has since expanded to plenty of other countries, reaching SA a little over two years ago. The current partnership will help solidify Viu’s spot in the South African streaming market.

    What to watch

To really know if a streaming service is worth your time, you need to give it a look yourself. But it doesn’t hurt to give you a little teaser, does it?

The main attraction for South African customers will be the catalogue of South African soapies such as 7de Laan, Skeem Saam and Uzalo to name a few. It’s not just local content, however. International movies like the Pitch Perfect trilogy, Central Intelligence, Mamma Mia and Get Out are also available.

It won’t be competing with the likes of Disney+ or Netflix anytime soon, but it still manages to undercut those prices by close to half. It’s worth checking out for yourself.

    Packages

    Viu and Vodacom team up

Viu’s most basic package is the Viu Daily Premium package which starts at R5.00 a day. Remember when people would pay R5.00 a day for ringtones? Well, it’s not 2008 anymore. Now, R5 gives you access to a month of Viu, plus an extra 250MB of daily recurring data.

R5 a day doesn’t sound like a lot, but when you add it up for the month, it ends up costing double a monthly subscription. It is a great way of testing the service before committing for a whole month.

There is a monthly package on offer, which has a better cost to value ratio. For just R69.00, you get access to a month of Viu, which comes with an extra 3GB of monthly video data.

If you’re already a Vodacom post-paid customer, then you have the option to add a Viu subscription plan to your bill. Those who are on pre-paid plans can pay for Viu by deducting airtime from your account directly.

It’s worth noting that any Viu Premium plan offers the account holder multiple profile accounts and an ad-free experience.

Rohit D’silva, Chief Business Officer in the Middle East and South Africa at Viu, said: “We are committed to offering our consumers great content, value and convenience at Viu. The collaboration with Vodacom makes streaming more affordable for Viu-ers during these tough economic times. Our subscribers can stream Viu Premium whenever and wherever using this exclusive Vodacom video data deal, at the price point that suits their pocket.”

Overall, it’s hard to hate on these deals. It’s cheap enough to test and cancel, which is a huge help to people trying to spend money wisely. And it’s cheap enough to keep it going indefinitely. And who can say no to free video data?
