The Vivo Y76 5G has just launched in South Africa, arriving with a price tag of R9,000. It’s a little late — the handset hit overseas shelves in late 2021. Still, better late than never. It’s the first Vivo device to launch in the country this year. Vivo promises an upgrade to camera tech, better fast charging, and of course, 5G.
If you’re on the lookout for a budget phone with great specs and a price that won’t require you to get a second mortgage, listen you.

Besides all the updates and new features, the Y76 5G stands out visually. Cosmic Aurora and Midnight Space are the two colours you can choose from, but that’s not what’s really important. Outer beauty is nothing without a little inner light. Inside this phone is a Mediatek Dimensity 700 processor, teaming up with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage space.
Vivo’s own Extended RAM technology has leveled up. This handset draws an extra 4GB from ROM and adds it to the 8GB of RAM already installed. This gives users 12GB of RAM at once. The tech might seem familiar. That’s because desktop PCs have been using page files for ages.
Up front, the phone has a 6.58in LED display. A good size for gaming which incidentally Vivo claims it handles extremely well. But we’ll get to that. The Y76 sports a 50MP main rear camera, with a 2MP macro and a 2MP depth camera in support. Around the front, you’ll find a 16MP selfie camera. At this price, you could do worse.
Batteries are getting better every year and Vivo has followed suit. The 4100mAh battery supports 44W fast charging option. It compares favourably to the Galaxy S22’s 45W fast charging skills. It’s a great feature for a sub-R10k phone on its own, too.
Then there’s something Vivo calls its Five-Dimensional Liquid Cooling System. Which, presumably, stops the phone from bursting into flames while you’re getting your game on. Add to that intelligently optimising network usage, probably using digital black magic, and you’re looking at a budget handset that might just perform well on the gaming front.
