Predictions have flown for absolute ages around possible Apple-made augmented reality (AR) hardware. So far, the only thing it has consistently done is not show up. That might change, as soon as the end of this year. You know, instead of 2023, when everyone’s actually expecting it.
A report from Digitimes (via MacRumours) claims that Apple’s AR headset prototypes have recently passed second-phase engineering validation tests (EVT 2). These tests ensure that the hardware meets the company’s standards, in terms of design and spec.
Apple pirates say ‘AR!’

Which, if these rumours from the headset’s component suppliers are true, is a serious milestone. But it’s not the milestone. ‘Prototype’ isn’t ‘production’ but Digitimes still claims we might see proper hardware as soon as the end of 2022. The publication also has a little more information in store, but it’s paywalled for the moment.
Any additional information would be welcome. Apple is fond of locking down as much information about upcoming products as possible. Augmented and virtual reality headsets certainly qualify, which leaves us playing the guessing game until someone leaves one on a park bench or something. Or perhaps Meta knows more than it’s letting on about Apple’s plans.
Either way, enough detail has turned up to allow artists like Ian Zelbo to create concept images of the apparent device. It might look like a set of Apple diving goggles right now, but that’s because it hasn’t been unveiled on stage in California yet. The headset will apparently feature eye-tracking, includes swappable headbands, and will likely leverage some of the iPhone’s processing power to get the job done.
It’ll probably also not be priced for everyone unless something of a miracle takes place. The company’s first AR hardware will supposedly be for enthusiasts only. Expect folding smartphone-like pricing when (or if) it’s announced this year.
