UPDATE: Samsung has issued its official invitation for the February Unpacked. 9 February is indeed the date we’ll see the company’s new crop of flagship devices. There will be a live stream and, of course, we’ll also be there keeping tabs on what the company has in store.
Samsung’s doing the Unpacked thing again this year. Of course, we already knew this but this time it’s official. More or less. The company has yet to send out its invitations but a post by Samsung president and head of its MX business Dr. TM Roh has cemented Unpacked taking place in the shortest month.
What isn’t official (yet) is the exact date. Even there, we’re reasonably certain. Rumour suggests that 9 February is the date and, given who was responsible for that info, we’ve got no reason to believe otherwise.
Unpacking Unpacked before it’s unpacked
Dr. Roh’s post gives away a bit more than the all-but-certain date for Unpacked, of course. There’s also a brief teaser video (above) that strongly hints at what’s coming to the event. The main thing, of course, is the combining of the Samsung Galaxy S and Galaxy Note lineup. The arty video shows the fusion between the two handsets (in silhouette) to create one brand new phone.
The clip also exhorts viewers to “Break the rules of what’s possible”. They don’t mean discover fusion-based space propulsion or create an anti-matter ray, presumably. There will be things possible with Samsung’s Galaxy S range that weren’t before, at a guess. Like carrying your phone’s stylus in the phone body as opposed to the phone’s case? That’s something Roh leans heavily on when he says “…you will help Samsung rewrite the future of smartphones once again”.
We’re sure there’s something more than that coming to Samsung’s event next month. Faster charging and an improved camera are just two of the features expected to be revealed shortly. There might be a few surprises, but we’re expecting them to be software-based. Unless there’s something special to do with the Exynos 2200 processor that Samsung has yet to share, in which case we might be in for an actual surprise in just a few short weeks.
