Fairly soon, you’ll be able to drop that fitness tracker altogether in favour of the humble earbud. According to new leaks, Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Buds may feature the ability to monitor various physical health metrics through your ears.
The next generation of Galaxy Buds will reportedly come with biometric sensors built right into ‘em. The type of sensors you would typically find in smartwatches and fitness trackers. These sensors will allow them to track workouts in a similar way to other trackers.

A leaked patent filed by the South Korean company details that the Buds will be “…capable of measuring health data, thanks to built-in sensors.” In addition to heart rate tracking, they’ll include an oxygen saturation monitor, a blood pressure sensor, stress tracker and a blood sugar sensor. It also details something that’ll be able to monitor “the status of your blood vessels.”
While it’s by no means revolutionary to put heart rate trackers in earbuds, this’ll be the first to offer more physical sensors.
We’re not sure whether they’re trying to replace traditional health trackers, but focussing efforts on packing more sensors into Buds doesn’t seem like the best idea. They’ll need larger batteries to power more sensors. At the same time, biometric tracking may be more accurate with two contact points instead of one.
One thing’s for sure: this tech isn’t far off. We may even see Samsung debut it with its S22 range next year.
