Vumatel experiencing widespread internet outage in Gauteng

We know that even the briefest drop in internet connectivity could affect the whole day’s workflow, (which is why a mini-UPS is perfect for load shedding). But it’s even worse if there’s no load shedding scheduled, and a whole province experiences an internet outage. Right Vumatel?

“We are experiencing a network outage in the Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni area. Technicians are currently investigating. Updates will follow. We apologise for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience,” Vumatel tweeted just before midday on 12 October 2021.

Prefacing the tweet, internet users from across Johannesburg and Ekhurhuleni took to social media to declare their dismay at the fibre network operator (FNO). That’s after many realised they’ve been shouting at their ISP’s for no reason.

Vox Telecoms jumped on the hype to detail that the problem is with the pink FNO: “Vumatel Active E Fibre Services (FTTH). Gauteng. Customers may experience problems with no connectivity. Vumatel engineers are attending,” it tweeted.

Of course, the trusty Down Detector error logging site details the current outage clearly — users in Gauteng have been logging connectivity faults since early morning on 12 October.

According to a screenshot shared on Twitter, the FNO is experiencing a logical failure, and its technicians are currently working to restore service.
