It’s no secret that gaming is one of the most lucrative industries — even in a pandemic-stricken world. If anything, people are gaming even more now that they’re scared of going outside. Of course, not all gaming sales comprise of consoles, but they’re a pretty big part of it — hence the high sales of Sony’s newest console, the PlayStation 5.
Sony reports that it’s sold over 10 million units of the perpetually out of stock PS5 console. Where those 10 million new PS5 owners bought their consoles is anyone’s guess — but they found ‘em somewhere and Sony’s laughing all the way to the bank.
Sony’s PS5: taller, faster and more desirable
In April, the company reported selling 7.8 million units — which means it upped that number by more than 2 million in three months. Thanks to those numbers, it’s become Sony’s fastest-selling console in history.
“While PS5 has reached more households faster than any of our previous consoles, we still have a lot of work ahead of us as demand for PS5 continues to outstrip supply,” says Jim Ryan, president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment according to The Verge. “I want gamers to know that while we continue to face unique challenges throughout the world that affect our industry and many others, improving inventory levels remains a top priority for SIE.”
But it’s not only the towering PS5 that sold well, according to the company its games are also reaching most of those consoles. Spider-Man: Miles Morales has sold in excess of 6.5 million copies since launch, while Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart sold more than 1.1 million copies in a month.
