This Super Mario-themed Tag Heuer smartwatch will set you back at least R32,000

Tag Heuer Super Mario

We get it, you’re a Super Mario (or just a Nintendo) super-fan. But just how far does that go? There are all sorts of limited edition gear starring the little red-clad plumber and while Tag Heuer’s new limited Connected Android Wear device isn’t even the most expensive wristwear we’ve seen featuring Ninty’s mascot, it could well be one of the coolest.

Smartwatching out for Super Mario

There’s not much difference between the standard Tag Heuer Connected and the Mario-sporting version in terms of actual performance. It’s a 45mm device, with a 430mAh battery that Tag reckons will last you a full day. It weighs in at 86 grams and the rubber strap pairs well with the 5ATM waterproof rating. The ‘Connected’ part will see all manner of notifications and movement tracking on your wrist.

What you’re paying for here are Nintendo’s favourite son and some interesting software implementation. Mario has been repurposed to try and keep you moving throughout the day. There’s a decent demonstration on the device’s website showing what you can expect in terms of animation and if you’ve ever wanted to feel like Mario heading towards a goal, this is your best shot (without resorting to copious amounts of mushrooms).

There is also a range of four custom Super Mario watch faces to choose from, in addition to all that lovely new animation, and there’s also the packaging to look forward to. It looks as though Nintendo had a serious amount of design input on the visuals. This wouldn’t look out of place in your Mario shrine (that we totally don’t have ourselves. Promise).

Tag’s Super Mario Wear OS device is limited to just 2,000 units and they’re only going to be available on the company’s website or via one of Tag’s various boutique stores come 15 July. We’ve checked and South Africa, sadly, isn’t on the latter list at all. Still, if you have $2,150 (about R32,000), you might score one online — if you’re quick enough.
