Ubisoft confirms it is building Assassin’s Creed Infinity, an “evolving online platform”

Ubisoft AC Infinity

It’s basically the never-ending franchise, like Call of Duty but without the guns — now Ubisoft’s got something a little different in mind for the Assassin’s Creed series. And we’re not sure how to feel about it.

First revealed by Bloomberg, the French game developer has since confirmed that Assassin’s Creed Infinity is actually a thing. Ubisoft hasn’t detailed too much but the original report claims that it’s set to be an “evolving online platform”, along the lines of Fortnite, or perhaps Call of Duty Warzone would be a more apt comparison.

Ubisoft’s going hard online

Ubisoft officially confirmed that Assassin’s Creed Infinity is a thing that will (eventually) exist but spent more time talking about who’s involved in the new cross-studio project than what it will eventually entail. In it, the company calls Infinity (which is still a codename, apparently), “…an important upcoming, early-in-development project” that will wind up being important to the future of the franchise. That’s… about it.

The Bloomberg report that broke this information goes a whole lot deeper. The project sounds like it will eventually contain several different settings, with the scope to add more over time as part of an “… massive online platform that evolves over time”. It could be a multiplayer experience along the lines of Call of Duty Warzone, which integrates past environments into a massive whole, or it could be a completely new sort of animal.

Assassin’s Creed has pushed for more connected features recently, though it has flubbed co-op story missions (most notably in Unity)  in the past and its attempts at more traditional multiplayer haven’t really gone anywhere.

The model that seems most likely to work as a massive, changing experience would be something along the lines of a predominately single-player MMO rather than a drop-in, drop-out multiplayer title. But this is all just speculation. The project — which is still in very early stages — has also been compared to Grand Theft Auto Online, which is another avenue where the war between Templars and Assassins could conceivably play out.
