Twitter is testing a new ‘unmention’ feature

Last year we saw Twitter roll out the ability to limit who replies to your tweets by mentioning them specifically. As a natural extension of that feature, Twitter is now testing a tool that’ll prevent other users from mentioning you. Right now that is possible, but you’ll have to explain to your buddy why you blocked them on the platform.

Using the incoming feature, users have more control over who has the ability to mention them. This can be for professional reasons, personal reasons or… maybe you’re just an introvert? In any of these cases, having the power to limit who can @ you should come in handy one day.

    The unmention invention

The feature is being tested according to Twitter’s product designer Dominic Camozzi, who hinted at the unmention feature in a series of screenshots on… you guessed it… Twitter.

Sometimes you want to talk, and sometimes you just … don't.

Check out these early concepts that could help control unwanted attention on Twitter.

    — Dominic Camozzi (@_dcrc_) June 14, 2021

In his words, these are ‘early concepts’. He explains that the company wants “…to make it easier to untag yourself from a Tweet or conversation you don’t want to be involved in.  Just pick “Unmention yourself from this conversation” from the more info menu and the link to your profile will be removed.”

To make it even clearer: the unmention tool will function in a similar way to untagging yourself from a Facebook post. “Going further, if someone you don’t follow @ mentions you, you’ll get a special notification. If you unmention yourself from there, the Tweet author will not be able to mention you again,” says Camozzi.

As always, we don’t have any indication of the feature’s rollout dates or future plans at this stage. It is, however, nice to know something like this is in the works.
